Beech Mountain, NC, August 30, 2008

Labor Day Weekend will see the return of Giant kites, sport kites and kids kitemaking.  Come see and join in the fun of kite making and flying in the cool mountains of North Carolina in the town of Beech Mountain, the east coasts highest town. 

Members of the Wings Across Carolina Kiting and Okra Society (WACKOS), Richmond Air Force (RAF) and other kite clubs will be flying 80 foot long giant kites, handmade kites based on Japanese and American designs, and flying steerable sport kites in displays of individual and pairs flying to music, or controlled patterns like figure skating.

Directions to Beech Mountain:

Richmond:  Take I-95 South to I-85 South, to I-40 West 

Eastern North Carolina: take I-40 west 

From I-40 West go to exit 188 for Winston-Salem/Yadkinville/Wilkesboro.  Get on US 421 west. 

Follow US 421 over I-77 to Boone N.C. (home of Appalachian State)

In Boone turn left onto N.C. 105  South, only one way to turn.

Follow 105 about 12 miles to NC 184 and turn right.

Follow 184 about 4 miles into Banner Elk.  At the traffic light turn left.  Go about ½ mile and turn right staying on NC 184.  After about 4 miles of twisting/turning mountain road you will come to the top of the mountain.  The flying field is on your right with a large Pizza place on the edge of the field.
